STORYLINE:
São Paulo’s MASP museum, one of Brazil’s most visited, has opened a new building 77 years after its inauguration to complete its architectural structure.

The 14-story tower was named after its first artistic director, Pietro Maria Bardi, and includes five new exhibition galleries, two multi-purpose galleries, a restoration laboratory, classrooms, a restaurant, and a museum shop.

Works by French painter Pierre-Auguste Renoir (1841-1919) are on display at the new building, attracting thousands of eager art lovers since March 28.

It also draws visitors who want to see how the iconic red, original MASP building blends with the new one on Paulista Avenue, Brazil’s iconic business street.

Next month, the museum will host an exhibition of works of Claude Monet (1840-1926), another French impressionist who is a fan favourite in Brazil.

The new building more than doubles the museum’s space to 7,821 square meters (84,184 square feet) and will increase its exhibition capacity by 66%.

Its façade is made of perforated and pleated metal sheets, which adds to the brutalist style conception of the neighbouring original building.

The original MASP building, which dates back to 1968, is a prime example of brutalism, which is characterized by exposed concrete structures, emphasis on raw materials, and monumental scale. Architect Lina Bo Bardi’s museum has become Sao Paulo’s most recognizable touristic attraction also due to its free span beneath the suspended block where the museum lies.

That open space under the MASP has also become a square where people come to eat lunch, watch performances by local artists, buy souvenirs in the Sunday open-air market, gaze at the sunset in the city’s gritty skyline or to protest, no matter their ideological allegiances.
