STORYLINE:
Relatives of some of the more than 127,000 people who have disappeared in Mexico symbolically shut down the country’s Senate over the country’s growing crisis on Thursday with a paste-up of missing person fliers.

"It seems that we are enemies of the government just for looking for what we love the most," said Jaqueline Palmeros, a searching mother who finally found her daughter Monserrat, five years after her disappearance.

The United Nations’ Committee on Enforced Disappearances (CED) _ that for years urged Mexico to address the crisis of the disappeared _ said Friday that it would request additional information from Mexico after noting that "enforced disappearance is practiced in a widespread or systematic manner."

On Tuesday, Mexican President Claudia Sheinbaum said that "there are no enforced disappearances by the state in Mexico" and that she had sent "a diplomatic note to express disagreement with the statements of the United Nations."

But the families of the more than 127,000 missing in Mexico, say the disappearances must be considered "enforced" in that they often happen when organized crime operates with the tolerance of, or at least the inaction, of authorities.

At the same time, the president asked the legislature to suspend the analysis of her initiatives to reform the General Law of Forced Disappearance and invited some search collectives to a dialogue with different levels of government.

The president explained that the purpose of the meetings was to add key elements that could strengthen the reforms. But many relatives, who for years have taken over the task of searching for their loved ones due to the inaction of authorities, remain skeptical.

Sheinbaum announced that the reforms would strengthen the National Search Commission and create new search protocols, as well as national databases for forensic identification and better coordination between prosecutors’ offices.
