"There was like an explosion on the propeller but there was a little sliver of light So the people that were next to me, we were like ‘was that a lightning?’ We wasn’t – we weren’t sure if it was the lightning or what, but the propeller just exploded and scattered, right. And then after that we saw the plane was just spiraling down like, going from left to right like that and we were like ‘oh my God, oh my God’ and we start screaming because we were like ‘is this really happening?’ We just couldn’t believe it. We were like ‘is this for real? This can’t be for real.’ And then we were crying, we were hugging each other when it hit the water we were like ‘oh my God, oh my God!’ And then we were scrambling. We were like ‘what do we do? Do we call 911?’ I mean how can we get these people help?"

"But I know for the first 15 minutes since that plane went down there was nobody in the water. The plane was just there and everybody was just standing still. We were crying. We were like ‘oh my God, what do we do?’ You know what I mean? Because do you jump in? Do you try to save them?"

STORYLINE:
"We weren’t sure if it was the lightning or what, but the propeller just exploded and scattered," Belle Angel, a writer from New Jersey told the Associated Press about the moment she witnessed the helicopter going down and crashing in the Hudson River.

A New York City sightseeing helicopter broke apart in midair Thursday and crashed upside-down into the Hudson River, killing the pilot and a family of five Spanish tourists in the latest U.S. aviation disaster, officials said.

Mayor Eric Adams said the flight began at a downtown heliport around 3 p.m. and the dead — including three children — had been recovered and removed from the water. The flight, which took the aircraft north along the Manhattan skyline and then back south toward the Statue of Liberty, lasted less than 18 minutes.

The Federal Aviation Administration identified the helicopter as a Bell 206, a model widely used in commercial and government aviation, including by sightseeing companies, TV news stations and police. It was initially developed for the U.S. Army before being adapted for other uses. Thousands have been manufactured over the years.

The National Transportation Safety Board said it would investigate. The cause of the crash is still unknown and under investigation.

The skies over Manhattan are routinely filled with planes and helicopters, both private recreational aircraft and commercial and tourist flights. Manhattan has several helipads from which business executives and others are whisked to destinations throughout the metropolitan area.
