"China is a responsible country. Our countermeasures against the U.S. bullying are not only to protect our legitimate rights and interests but also to uphold international rules and order, safeguard the common interests of all countries, and maintain international fairness and justice. In the face of U.S. bullying and hegemony, compromise and concession are not a way out."

5. SOUNDBITE (Mandarin) Lin Jian, Chinese Foreign Ministry spokesperson:
“This report is a distortion of facts and is seriously inconsistent with the truth. Regarding "Volt Typhoon," China has clearly rejected the groundless accusations from the U.S. on various occasions, presenting the investigation report from Chinese cybersecurity agencies to the U.S., pointing out that the related incidents were fabricated and slander by U.S. intelligence agencies against China.”

7. SOUNDBITE (Mandarin) Lin Jian, Chinese Foreign Ministry spokesperson:
“China strongly deplores and firmly opposes Japan’s collusion with NATO to unjustly interfere in China’s internal affairs, escalate regional tensions, and provoke confrontation. The Asia-Pacific region is a promising land for cooperation and development. It does not need military blocs, nor does it need major power confrontation or small cliques that incite a new Cold War.”

STORYLINE:
China on Friday defended its retaliatory tariffs on the U.S. as protecting both its national rights and interests and “international fairness and justice” after Beijing said it would hike duties on U.S. goods from 84% to 125%.
The U.S. and China have escalated a new trade war by raising levies on each other’s exports even as U.S. President Donald Trump hit a pause on tariffs for other countries.
Trump’s universal tariffs on China now total 145%.
At a daily news briefing on Friday, Foreign Ministry spokesperson Lin Jian slammed Trump’s tariff hikes and insisted China was a “responsible country” while justifying the country’s countermeasures.
“In the face of U.S. bullying and hegemony, compromise and concession are not a way out,” Lin said.
He also refuted a report that Chinese officials admitted at a closed-door meeting last December that Beijing has played a role in cyber attacks targeting key U.S. key infrastructure in retaliation for supporting Taiwan.
Calling the report a “distortion of facts“ and ”inconsistent with the truth,” Lin said the Chinese government has made clear to the U.S. on many occasions that the incidents were "fabricated" by U.S. intelligence and amounted to "slander."
Separately, Lin expressed China’s opposition to the cooperation between Japan and NATO after Japanese Prime Minister Shigeru Ishiba and NATO chief Mark Rutte stressed the need to tackle together growing threats from China, North Korea and Russia during talks earlier in the week.
Lin said NATO is a regional military organization and should not overstretch beyond its scope.
