“Investors are still rattled by tariff war between US and China, with White House confirming that the effective tariff rate on China was 145%, more than the 125% announced. But today we also notice that Hong Kong market was more resilient. The Hang Seng index only found support around 20,450. Before the market opened, it was expected Hang Seng Index may test the 20,000 mark, but actually it found support around 20,450.”

“Investors have to fasten the seat belts. We expect more volatility ahead in stock markets as well as in the bond market. Investors should be wary of the sell off in bond markets recently. There were lots of rumors, rumors saying that China and Japan are dumping US Treasuries. While these rumors are not confirmed, but the bond market, actually, we did see sell off, rising bond yields and falling bond prices.”

STORYLINE:
Asian shares sank Friday after U.S. stocks gave up much of their historic gains from the day before.

Hong Kong’s Hang Seng edged down 0.4% to 20,606.04 as a result of deepening worries over President Donald Trump’s trade war.

Louis Wong, Director, Philip Securities Group, said that the Hong Kong market had been more resilient, but he warned of more turbulence to come.

“Investors have to fasten the seat belts. We expect more volatility ahead in stock markets as well as in the bond market."

He said investors needed to be wary about the sell off in bond markets recently.

"There were lots of rumors, saying that China and Japan are dumping US Treasuries. While these rumors are not confirmed, but the bond market, actually, we did see sell off, rising bond yields and falling bond prices.”
