2. SOUNDBITE (English) Dani Horbiak, Crash Wintess:
"I work from home full-time and I actually heard it before I saw it, but it almost sounded like five or six gunshots out of the sky. So I looked out my window and I saw a helicopter falling to pieces. I saw several pieces come off of it. They all smashed into the water. It was very scary to see."

4. SOUNDBITE (English) Dani Horbiak, Crash Wintess:
"It fell so high out of the sky, and just the velocity that it smashed into the water, I was not feeling confident that people are going to be able to survive that. It’s terrible to think about that happening outside your window."

6. SOUNDBITE (English) Dani Horbiak, Crash Wintess:
"I’m seeing helicopters, planes, boats coming and going all day long. It almost seems like there’s maybe a flight path over the river. And I think for reasons such as this, we’re really grateful that nothing hit a building in this area because there are so many residential high-rises here too."
7. Tracking shot of media near Hudson River and crash site
8. SOUNDBITE (English) Dani Horbiak, Crash Wintess:
"I called 9-1-1 right away and the line was busy, I assume, from other people also calling. But it was instantaneous that I saw it almost looked like one of the ferries pull over first and then very soon after I saw response teams from New York and New Jersey, boats with flashing lights on them, so I knew that there was response almost immediately."

STORYLINE:
A sightseeing helicopter broke apart in midair Thursday and crashed upside-down into the Hudson River between Manhattan and the New Jersey waterfront, killing six people, including a family of Spanish tourists, in the latest high-profile aviation disaster in the U.S., officials said.

Dani Horbiak was at her home in Jersey City when she heard what sounded like “gunshots out of the sky.”

“So I looked out my window and I saw a helicopter falling to pieces,” she said. "I saw several pieces come off of it. They all smashed into the water.”

The Federal Aviation Administration identified the helicopter as a Bell 206, a model widely used in commercial and government aviation, including by sightseeing companies, TV news stations and police departments. The National Transportation Safety Board said it would investigate.

The skies over Manhattan are routinely filled with planes and helicopters, both private recreational aircraft and commercial and tourist flights. Manhattan has several helipads that whisk business executives and others to destinations throughout the metropolitan area.

Over the years, there have been multiple crashes, including a collision between a plane and a tourist helicopter over the Hudson River in 2009 that killed nine people and the 2018 crash of a charter helicopter offering “open door” flights that went down into the East River, killing five people.
