STORYLINE:
Vietnam welcomed U.S. President Donald Trump’s 90-day pause on tariffs for most countries as a "very positive move” and said it would negotiate with the U.S. for “reciprocal trade agreements,” said Pham Thu Hang, the spokesperson for Vietnam’s foreign ministry.

The Southeast Asian nation had elevated the U.S. to its highest diplomatic status in 2023 when former president Joe Biden had visited.

On Thursday, Hang said that Vietnam would negotiate with the U.S. on the basis of this agreement for “reciprocal trade agreements on the basis of mutual respect” and find a solution aimed at “credible, sustainable trade which meets the interests of the two countries peoples and businesses.”

Vietnam had been slammed with a reciprocal tariff of 46% on exports which analysts had said would harm key sectors like electronics, textiles, footwear and seafood while also eroding trust.
