++BEGINS AND ENDS ON SOUNDBITE++

Washington – 10 April 2025
1. SOUNDBITE (English) Rep. Thomas Massie, (R) Kentucky:
“This is a framework for financial collapse of our country is what this is. This is a framework for the biggest deficit increase in the history of Congress. That’s what this framework is. There could have been promises to cut spending, but there were not.”
2. SOUNDBITE (English) Rep. Jodey Arrington, (R) Texas:
“The full America First agenda is not just cutting taxes and other pro-growth policies like unleashing American energy privilege. It’s not just simply giving the President more resources for border security and strengthening our defense. I would say, most importantly, it’s putting our nation on the path to balance because if we bankrupt this country, nothing else matters.”
3. SOUNDBITE (English) Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez, (D) New York:
“The Republican Party in its first hundred days has set themselves up, yes, not only to lose majorities, but also to frankly enrich themselves in the process. I don’t even know if they want to keep their majorities next year more than they are here to enrich themselves, and everyone should be enraged at that.”
4. SOUNDBITE (English) Rep. Thomas Massie, (R) Kentucky:
“The people who traded their vote for a promise, I think that’s just salve for their conscience. They were probably maybe looking for an off-ramp because what was coming next was a lot of pressure from the president to vote for this.”

STORYLINE:
House Republicans have narrowly approved their budget framework.
The 216-214 tally was a turnaround for Speaker Mike Johnson after abruptly postponing Wednesday’s vote.
Rep. Jodey Arrington, (R) Texas, who is the chairman of the House Budget Committee says putting the nation on the path to balance is the priority.
“The full America First agenda is not just cutting taxes and other pro-growth policies like unleashing American energy privilege. It’s not just simply giving the President more resources for border security and strengthening our defense. I would say, most importantly, it’s putting our nation on the path to balance because if we bankrupt this country nothing else matters” Arrington said.
Meanwhile, Rep. Thomas Massie, (R) Kentucky, who was a no vote, says the frame work is for the financial collapse of the country.
“This is a framework for financial collapse of our country is what this is. This is a framework for the biggest deficit increase in the history of Congress. That’s what this framework is. There could have been promises to cut spending, but there were not.”
Across the aisle, Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez, (D) New York, says that Republicans are only trying to enrich themselves.
“I do believe that the Republican party in its first hundred days has set themselves up, yes, not only to lose majorities, but also to frankly enrich themselves in the process. I don’t even know if they want to keep their majorities next year more than they are here to enrich themselves, and everyone should be enraged at that,” Cortez said.
The bill is central to President Donald Trump’s agenda of tax breaks, spending cuts and mass deportations.
There are still more votes ahead as lawmakers draft a final package in the weeks to come.
