1. Wide shot press conference
2. UPSOUND (French) Thierry Frémaux, artistic director, Cannes Film Festival:
"Hello everyone, we are meeting here at Montparnasse and I am going to start to tell you the participants in this competition, which are 19 (films) Jafar Panahi, the Iranian filmmaker. The movie is called ‘A Simple Accident’ and Jafar asked us not to say anything about his film for the moment, which is in competition. Joachim Trier is Norwegian."
3. SOUNDBITE (English) Thierry Frémaux, artistic director, Cannes Film Festival:
"If you have an eye on the list of the selection in the last seven, eight years, Cannes was great – Cannes and the films of Cannes were great. And awarded everywhere and especially last year. So what will happen for the films just mentioned, the list this morning, I really don’t know. I really don’t know what will be the rest of the year and I don’t know what – but I’m very happy with is, not the coincidence but the link between Cannes in May and – for example – the Academy Awards in March the year after, you can arrive in Cannes in May and be still alive in March almost one year later."
4. UPSOUND (French) Thierry Frémaux, artistic director, Cannes Film Festival:
"Richard Linklater, we are changing to a completely different universe. His film is called ‘Nouvelle Vague,’ you have no doubt heard about it. It is a film about the set of ‘À bout de souffle’ by Jean-Luc Godard, and it was a film that – in fact – was said to set the formation of what new wave was."
5. SOUNDBITE (English) Thierry Frémaux, artistic director, Cannes Film Festival:
"Was I able one year ago to guess the destiny of ‘Anora,’ ‘Emilia Perez,’ ‘The Substance,’ ‘Flow’ or the movie of Payal Kapadia? No. It’s why this game is wonderful. It’s also why this – our games, I mean Cannes, or Berlin, or Venice, or Telluride, or Sundance is something wonderful, because you never know, it’s about art."
6. UPSOUND (French) Thierry Frémaux, artistic director, Cannes Film Festival:
"’Eddington,’ with Joaquin Phoenix as the lead. It’s a movie about contemporary America, which was shot a year ago, because when we talk about contemporary America, the news moves so fast in the America of today. But, he still talks globally about what the United States has become through a municipal campaign in a small town whose sheriff is Joaquin Phoenix. It is, of course, a contemporary movie. We are happy to welcome Ari Aster and A24 for this film, which is therefore called ‘Eddington.’ And Wes Anderson, with ‘The Phoenician Scheme.’"
7. SOUNDBITE (English) Thierry Frémaux, artistic director, Cannes Film Festival:
"That is maybe what you can mention as the power of Cannes and we know that we have some power and we give this power to the artist."
8. UPSOUND (French) Thierry Frémaux, artistic director, Cannes Film Festival:
"Kleber Mendonça Filho, a Brazilian filmmaker, has returned to his north east. If I say that, it’s because he just spent a long time in France but he shot in the north east, he shot in his city of Recife, of which he had made a magnificent portrait and story through those of the movie theaters, which are not absent in this crime movie, which nevertheless bears the title ‘The Secret Agent,’ ‘O Secreto Agente.’ ‘The Secret Agent’ is more of a crime movie, an atmospheric movie, a movie set in the ’70s and ’80s that also tells the story of this Brazil."
9. SOUNDBITE (English) Thierry Frémaux, artistic director, Cannes Film Festival – on not being a political festival, but allowing filmmakers to make political statements.
