3. SOUNDBITE (English) Mike Fowler, volunteer at the Rolls-Royce and Bentley Museum:
“My name is Mike Fowler, currently we are at the Rolls-Royce Foundation in Mechanicsburg, Pennsylvania. I’m one of the monthly volunteers. I am here typically two times a month doing everything from driving the cars, doing small bits of maintenance, cleaning them, or doing things necessary to keep a large complex running.”

5. SOUNDBITE (English) Mike Fowler, volunteer at the Rolls-Royce and Bentley Museum:
“Getting to drive these, it’s just, it’s a huge privilege and I will say it’s part of the preservation of these cars too though, is, is driving them. Cars weren’t designed to sit still for years on end. They need their oil to flow, they need their coolant, all of these lubrications, to, to move around, they need these rubber seals to expand with heat.”

7. SOUNDBITE (English) Mike Fowler, volunteer at the Rolls-Royce and Bentley Museum:
“I often wonder if the homes around here know the foundation exists, or if they always just wonder why do we see these vintage Rolls Royce and Bentleys roaming around from time to time?"

9. SOUNDBITE (English) Sarah Holibaugh, head librarian and archivist for the Rolls-Royce Foundation:
“So, the role of the foundation is we’re essentially the caretakers for all of the historical records for every Rolls-Royce and Bentley that has come into North America from 1907 all the way through into the 2000s.”

11. SOUNDBITE (English) Sarah Holibaugh, head librarian and archivist for the Rolls-Royce Foundation:
“We rely on the volunteers for almost everything. They are the lifeblood. They are the pulse that keeps the foundation moving. We rely on them for everything from basic admin stuff, to helping us with events, to preservation. They are scanning digitizing records. They are re-homing files into more preservation friendly folders, papers, cabinets.”

16. SOUNDBITE (English) Sarah Holibaugh, head librarian and archivist for the Rolls-Royce Foundation:
“These cars, unlike more everyday cars, they outlast their owners, meaning they will live on long past your ownership has ended. And so, it’s important to keep these records to pass on to the next generation so they can have an appreciation for the drivable art pieces that they have and understand where they came from, the owners that had them, their lifestyles, the kind of cultural and romance of owning a Rolls-Royce or Bentley.”

STORYLINE:
Mike Fowler had been faintly aware that a museum of Rolls-Royce and Bentley vehicles existed near his boyhood home in the suburbs of Harrisburg, Pennsylvania, but the car enthusiast didn’t expect the experience he got when he started volunteering there.
The museum, owned by the Rolls-Royce Foundation, includes a showroom, maintenance area and a third room being converted into a library and reading room.
