“We jumped out (outside) in the first minutes (after the attack). The child was still alive. We tried to call an ambulance, but there was no connection. Then guys from the State Emergency Service came running up and started trying to take the child’s pulse. Then ambulances began to arrive. They grabbed the child, started resuscitating him, and took him to the ambulance. We hoped until the last moment that he was just unconscious and would be resuscitated. Literally an hour later we were informed that the child could not be saved.”

STORYLINE:
Anger and outrage gripped the hometown of Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy on Tuesday as it held funerals for some of the 20 people, including nine children, killed by a Russian missile that tore through apartment buildings and blasted a playground.

More than 70 were wounded in the attack last Friday evening in Kryvyi Rih.

The children were playing on swings and in a sandbox in a tree-lined park at the time.

Bodies were strewn across the grass.

The U.N. Human Rights Office in Ukraine said it was the deadliest single verified strike harming children since the start of Russia’s full-scale invasion in February 2022. It was also one of the deadliest attacks so far this year.

In Kryvyi Rih on Tuesday, funerals of five children took place. Four other children, who were victims of the Russian attack, were buried on Monday.

In the morning, citizens said their last goodbye to Tymofii Tsvitok, 3, the youngest victim, who was killed by a Russian missile that blasted next to the playground.

Literally an hour later we were informed that the child could not be saved,” Iryna Poliakova, 38, neighbour and friend of family, said to the Associated Press

The other funeral that happened was for Mykyta Perekhrest, 15, and Kostiantyn Novic, 16, two cousins that were killed together on Friday.
