So, they called us to come out to see if we can help because he had locked himself in his room.”

“So, when we got there, we were just there more to kind of de-escalate. He was already locked in the bathroom. He had issues with police. So, us just coming in and being able to say, yes, we are still here in a police capacity, but we’re more here for the path of least resistance. We just want everybody to be safe, you to be safe. How can we, you know, support you in getting to the hospital, getting to talk to somebody and then, you know, get into a better place.”

“I think there was a large police presence there which made him more anxious. So, I think just being able to say, okay, let us give you a little bit. So, we’ll having everybody kind of leave except us make you feel more comfortable. So that immediately brought his anxiety down. He was more willing to talk. He was willing to open the door. So, I think just us being there and being able to say, yes, we’re police, but in a different capacity meant everything.”

“You can be a police officer for a week and you know that people need help a different way. I knew just based off of my personal experience at home. My uncle who has autism, we took care of him his whole life. You get to experience that a little bit differently and you also expect and would want someone to treat that person the way you want your family member to be treated.”
