STORYLINE:
South Korea’s conservative lawmaker Ahn Cheol-soo announced his presidential bid on Tuesday, promising to push for a major constitutional reform if elected.

In his announcement, Ahn said that the reform must be carried out to reduce the powers of the president and the privileges of the National Assembly. The calls for constitutional reform have grown louder after former President Yoon Suk Yeol’s December 3 martial law declaration, which eventually led to his removal from the office last Friday.

"I will pursue a major constitutional reform for national integration," Ahn told supporters in downtown Seoul. "We must open the 7th Republic."

Earlier in the day, the South Korean government officially set a snap presidential election for June 3. Acting Interior Minister Ko Ki-dong said the decision regarding the election date is based on Article 68 of the Constitution and Article 35 of the Public Official Election Act, which regulate elections in the event of a vacancy in the presidency.
