“The U.S. abuse of tariffs severely infringes on the legitimate rights and interests of various countries, violates World Trade Organization (WTO) rules, damages the rules-based multilateral trading system, and disrupts the stability of the global economic order. This is a typical act of unilateralism, protectionism, and economic bullying, which has been widely opposed by the international community. China strongly condemns and firmly opposes this.”

5. SOUNDBITE (Mandarin) Lin Jian, Chinese Foreign Ministry spokesperson:
“Chinese people do not provoke trouble, nor are they afraid of it. Pressure, threats, and blackmail are not the right ways to deal with China. China will surely take necessary measures to resolutely safeguard its legitimate rights and interests. If the U.S. disregards the interests of both countries and the international community and insists on engaging in a tariff war and trade war, China will fight to the end.”

STORYLINE:
China’s Foreign Ministry on Tuesday vowed that the country would “fight to the end” and take countermeasures against the United States to safeguard its interests after President Donald Trump threatened an additional 50% tariff on Chinese imports.
“This is a typical act of unilateralism, protectionism, and economic bullying, which has been widely opposed by the international community. China strongly condemns and firmly opposes this,” the ministry spokesperson Lin Jian said when asked about Trump’s latest threat at a daily news briefing.
“Chinese people do not provoke trouble, nor are they afraid of it. Pressure, threats, and blackmail are not the right ways to deal with China,” he said.
“If the U.S. disregards the interests of both countries and the international community and insists on engaging in a tariff war and trade war, China will fight to the end,” Lin warned but did not detail any possible countermeasures.
Trump’s threat Monday of additional tariffs on China raised fresh concerns that his drive to rebalance the global economy could intensify a financially destructive trade war.
Stock markets from Tokyo to New York have become more unstable as the tariff war worsens.
Trump’s threat came after China said it would retaliate against U.S. tariffs he announced last week.
“If China does not withdraw its 34% increase above their already long term trading abuses by tomorrow, April 8th, 2025, the United States will impose ADDITIONAL Tariffs on China of 50%, effective April 9th,” Trump wrote on Truth Social.
“Additionally, all talks with China concerning their requested meetings with us will be terminated!”
In Beijing, Lin accused the U.S. of lacking sincerity for talks, saying “if the US really wants to engage in dialogue, it should adopt an attitude of equality, mutual respect and mutual benefit.”
