"I think it’s quite unbelievable, but since it’s coming from Trump, it sounds somewhat reasonable. It really fits his style. I just don’t know if he’s saying this today and will suddenly have a new idea tomorrow. It feels like you can’t consider his actions with normal people’s usual thinking.”

6. SOUNDBITE (Mandarin) Wang (no first name given):
“But I think for ordinary people, we might slowly see some changes. But I believe our country is quite self-sufficient now, so it (Trump’s tariffs) might not have a significant impact on our daily lives. But they could affect some businesses related to imports and exports."

STORYLINE:
On the streets of Beijing Tuesday, residents appeared surprised but mostly undeterred by US President Donald Trump’s overnight threat of imposing additional 50 percent tariffs.
Trump said Monday he may raise tariffs more against China after the world’s second-largest economy retaliated last week with its own set of tariffs against U.S. products.
"I think it’s quite unbelievable, but since it’s coming from Trump, it sounds somewhat reasonable. It really fits his style” said one Beijing resident surnamed Wang who works in the IT industry.
She said wasn’t worried about the impact on daily life, but was concerned over its potential impact on Chinese importers and exporters.
Another Beijing resident who declined to give his name commended Trump, saying his policies help China’s economic development, referring to the US President by a nickname, “Chuan Jianguo” which translates as “Trump the nation builder.” "He has indeed played a role in making China develop faster” he said.
37-year old Wu Qi, who works in the construction industry, noted the unpredictability of Trump’s policies. “He says one thing today and another tomorrow” Wu said, adding that he hopes impact on ordinary people would be minimal.
“Conflicts are inevitable, it just depends on how the country handles it” Wu said, “even if it ends up in a local conflict or a hot war, our country is not afraid.”
