“But these measures (tariffs) may end up harming all, yet we do not believe in megaphone diplomacy. As part of our soft diplomacy of quiet engagement, and I build this consensus among ASEAN leaders, we will be dispatching together with our colleagues in ASEAN, our officials to Washington to begin the process of dialogue. There may be limited room to revisit the underlying intent, but there is still scope for adjusting the policy’s implementation.”

4. SOUNDBITE (English) Anwar Ibrahim, Malaysian Prime Minister:
“The Trump tariffs are not the first challenge to multilateralism, nor will they be the last, but if ASEAN can hold its nerve, staying open, pragmatic and cohesive, it may yet be among the last believers in a world that works better when it works together.”

STORYLINE:
Malaysian Prime Minister and ASEAN chair Anwar Ibrahim called for negotiations with the United Sates amid tariffs on Tuesday.
Speaking at an ASEAN event in Kuala Lumpur, Ibrahim said leaders of the 10-member bloc agreed to send officials to the U.S. "to begin the process of dialogue."
He said the move to initiate discussions is part of Malaysia’s alignment with the "soft diplomacy of quiet engagement" as opposed to "megaphone diplomacy."
He added that "the Trump tariffs are not the first challenge to multilateralism, nor will they be the last."
On April 5, Malaysia, Indonesia, Brunei, the Philippines, and Singapore held a teleconference to discuss the tariffs, and ASEAN’s economics ministers are scheduled to meet on Thursday in an attempt to coordinate a collective response.
