“The principal reason for us being here is to unveil the Mediterranean blue, which is a 10-carat vivid blue diamond that’s going to be the center piece of our Geneva high jewels auction. Initially, we brought along a few diamond friends. In total, we have over 700 carats of diamonds and only eight stones. Some of the rarest diamonds in the world. And our total value is well over $100 million U.S. dollars.”

“There’s a reason that we’re unveiling this here in Abu Dhabi. We have great optimism about the region. We feel very strongly that this is the kind of place where you have both traders and collectors of diamonds of this importance and of this rarity. These aren’t just everyday diamonds. These are diamonds that really are one of a kind, but also represent some of the rarest natural treasures that exist.”

STORYLINE:
Auction house Sotheby’s unveiled a set of rare diamonds valued at $100 million in an exhibition center in Abu Dhabi on Tuesday.
Among the jewels on display is the 10.03 carat Mediterranean Blue, considered one of the most important blue diamonds ever discovered.
Sotheby’s expects it to fetch $20 million at an auction to be held in Geneva in May.
“The principal reason for us being here is to unveil the Mediterranean blue, which is a 10-carat vivid blue diamond that’s going to be the centerpiece of our Geneva high jewels auction,” said Quig Bruning, Sotheby’s head of jewels in North America, Europe and the Middle East.
Just eight diamonds are on display at the exhibition but they have a combined total weight of over 700 carats.
Bruning said Abu Dhabi was chosen for the exhibition for the high level of interest in diamonds there.
“We feel very strongly that this is the kind of place where you have both traders and collectors of diamonds of this importance and of this rarity," he told the Associated Press.
"These aren’t just everyday diamonds. These are diamonds that really are one of a kind,” he said.
The exhibition will last for two days and will close on 9 April, after which Sotheby’s will auction the Mediterranean Blue Diamond in Geneva on 13 May.
