Cairo, Egypt – 7 April 2025
1. French President Emmanuel Macron and Egyptian President Abdel Fattah el-Sissi arriving for joint statement
2. SOUNDBITE (French) Emmanuel Macron, French President:
“We condemn the resumption of the Israeli attacks in Gaza which is a dramatic setback for the civilian pollution, the hostages, their families and the entire region. We call for a return of an immediate ceasefire, for the release of all the hostages still detained by the Hamas in Gaza. Negotiations must resume without any delay and in a constructive manner, and I want to welcome the tireless efforts from Egypt for the ceasefire and release of the hostages. France also joins Egypt on a major point, and I want to strongly reiterate here: we are firmly opposed to population displacements and any annexation of Gaza as well as the West Bank. It would be a violation of international law, a serious threat for the region, including for Israel.”

3. SOUNDBITE (French) Emmanuel Macron, French President:
“It is now urgent that Russia stops false pretences and delaying tactics and accepts the ceasefire (in Ukraine) without any conditions which was the proposal of President Trump, a proposal accepted by President Zelenskyy in Jeddah on March 11th. It’s been nearly one month that not only Russia didn’t comply with it, but increased the bombings against civilians with, again, tragic deaths just a few days ago in Ukraine. I want to reiterate here our friendship with the Ukrainian people.”
4. Macron and el-Sissi shaking hands and leaving
STORYLINE:
French President Emmanuel Macron is calling for another ceasefire in the Gaza Strip and the release of hostages detained by Hamas.
Macron was in Egypt on Monday to meet with President Abdel Fattah el-Sissi and later with Jordan’s King Abdullah II, close Western allies who are also calling for a ceasefire.
Israel ended its truce with Hamas last month and cut off all imports of food, fuel and humanitarian aid to the territory’s 2 million Palestinians to try and pressure Hamas to accept new terms in their ceasefire agreement.
“We condemn the resumption of the Israeli attacks in Gaza which is a dramatic setback for the civilian pollution, the hostages, their families and the entire region… Negotiations must resume without any delay and in a constructive manner,” Macron said during a joint statement with his Egyptian counterpart.
Egypt and the Gulf nation of Qatar have served as key mediators with Hamas.
On Ukraine, Macron said it was “now urgent that Russia stops false pretences and delaying tactics and accepts the ceasefire without any conditions."
