"I came to Kakuma in 2001 and life was very hard in those days. Not to mention the heat and the infrastructure was not as good as it is now. Life was very bad in the refugee camp. I did casual jobs within the camp and got paid one thousand Kenya Shillings (7.75 USD). I saved the money and that helped to get me into the position I am in today (owner of multiple businesses)."

"We find that refugee business owners and business owners in these communities at large, actually have the characteristics that make world-class entrepreneurs. They are resilient, they are resourceful, they have access to networks, they have adaptability. The things that we study to make these great entrepreneurs, but the problem is, we actually don’t look to businesses in displacement-affected communities in the same way. And that’s what we found is that in some ways, what refugees unfortunately have had to go through actually makes a really good business owner."

"Some people are afraid of taking loans, but loans are good. Because even your closest friend can not lend you money to start a business, but organizations like Inkomoko lend out money for a business startup. That is how you grow yourself."
