My parents came from the Holocaust, and in no way I would let Bibi (Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu) and his gang, to change this country from being a democracy to a dictatorship. This is the message. I’m here, I’m going to demonstrate, I’m gonna fight as long as we have democracy in Israel. That’s my message."
3. SOUNDBITE (English) Menashe Yehezkel-Baum, protester:
"We’re here today, actually, to send a very clear message to our prime minister. Your problems are here, we are your citizens, and you have to solve the problem with us. Going to Hungary, then to the U.S. will not solve any problem. We have to solve the problems here. Stop dividing us. Stop destroying our very basic and essential institute like the Supreme Court, the army, the security services, the police, we are here forever. You failed."

STORYLINE:
Israelis protested in Tel Aviv on Monday as the country’s Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu met U.S. President Donald Trump in Washington.

The protest was held against Netanyahu and his government, following their moves to oust top security and legal officials, and the war’s resumption in Gaza.

"We’re here today to send a very clear message," said one protester Menashe Yehezkel-Baum, "stop destroying our very basic and essential institute like the Supreme Court, the army, the security services, the police."

Families of hostages along with some of those recently freed from Gaza and their supporters have urged Trump to help ensure the fighting ends.

"We are on the verge from turning from democracy to dictatorship, and I’m here to defend the democracy," said another protester Nitzan Shekel.

Netanyahu’s trip marks the first visit to the U.S. by a foreign leader since Trump unleashed tariffs on countries around the world.

It is Netanyahu’s second time meeting with Trump since the latter began his latest term in January.

Shortly before their meeting, the White House announced that Trump and Netanyahu’s plans to hold a joint news conference had been canceled.

The White House did not offer any immediate explanation for why it was scrapped, but Trump and Netanyahu were expected to make comments to reporters at the start of their scheduled Oval Office meeting.

Netanyahu’s office has put the focus of his hastily organized Washington visit on the tariffs, while stressing that the two leaders will discuss major geopolitical issues including the war in Gaza, tensions with Iran, Israel-Turkey ties and the International Criminal Court, which issued an arrest warrant against the Israeli leader last year.

Trump in February signed an executive order imposing sanctions on the ICC over its investigations of Israel.
