"When the annulment of the conviction was announced, we were hit with outrage and a sense that it could have been any one of us. I think that, whether it’s in Spain or here in Brazil, it’s always infuriating when a victim’s testimony is discredited, as it was by this court."

STORYLINE:
A group of female activists gathered on Monday in front of the Spanish consulate in Rio de Janeiro to protest a recent decision by a court in Spain to clear Brazilian soccer player Dani Alves of sexual assault charges.

In a symbolic act, demonstrators held signs accusing the player of rape and the justice system of being complicit in the crime.

On March 28th, Alves won his appeal against a sexual assault conviction as a Spanish court overturned the ruling in a case that lasted more than three years and saw the former Barcelona defender spend 14 months in jail.

In Brazil, protesters demanded that the court’s decision be reversed and called for unity among feminist collectives, women’s groups, and other allies in the fight against rape and femicide.

“When we heard the news that the conviction had been overturned, we were overwhelmed with anger and a feeling that it could have happened to any of us,” said Isis Reis, a 33-year-old activist.

“I think that regardless of whether it’s in Spain or here in Brazil, it’s always infuriating when the victim’s testimony is dismissed, as it was by this court,” she said.

Alves was found guilty in February 2024 of raping a woman in a nightclub in December 2022 and sentenced to four years and six months in prison.

But the four judges of a Barcelona-based appeals court ruled unanimously to overturn the conviction after reviewing the evidence and testimonies given to the lower court.

He denied any wrongdoing during the three-day trial.
