STORYLINE:
Thousands of people on Saturday demonstrated in Rome against plans by some European nations to increase spending on defense.
Protesters came from all over the country to join the rally, organised by Italy’s 5 Star Movement party.
Many of the demonstrators argued that governments should invest in society, not in defence.
U.S. administration officials have urged European allies to take more responsibility for their own security,
They are now faced with ramping up defense spending even more than they already have since Russia invaded Ukraine over three years ago.
