"If the McCarrick case hadn’t happened and brought enormous pressure to bear on the U.S. bishops and on Rome, that it’s possible the pope would not have felt compelled to laicize McCarrick so quickly and to summon the world’s bishops to Rome for their abuse summit of February 2019, and then to go a step further and pass a superficial and it turns out rather ineffective law called ‘Vos Estis Lux Mundi’, which is Latin for ‘you are the light of the world’, but this was his bishop accountability law."

"Bishop accountability became the watchword of not just American bishops, but the Vatican, the Curia, and the pope himself. That promise has never materialized. We have not seen swift and stern and definitive action taken against abusive bishops since the punishment of McCarrick. We haven’t seen that level of transparency. The bishops who have been punished under the pope’s new law, the punishments have been light, and there has been almost no public information about why they have been removed from their posts. McCarrick was a promise, it seemed, that never got fulfilled by Pope Francis."

STORYLINE:
Theodore McCarrick, a once-powerful Catholic cardinal who was defrocked by Pope Francis in 2019 after a Vatican investigation determined he had molested adults and children, has died. He was 94.
Archbishop of Washington Robert McElroy issued a statement Friday confirming McCarrick’s death a day earlier but provided no details.
His statement focused on those McCarrick abused.
