"Here, you can see two uniforms of the National People’s Army, which is the army of the GDR. On the left side, there is a coat uniform of an Army General. The rank of general was the highest rank in the armed forces of the GDR. This particular uniform belonged to Heinz Hoffmann, who was also the Minister for National Defense and thus the highest-ranking soldier, in a way. On the right side, we see the uniform of a Major of the Land Forces. In this case, he belonged to the Pioneers."

"In this row of shelves, we store objects that originate from the Palace of the Republic. This was, in a way, the political and cultural center of the GDR in the capital city of Berlin. What you see here are the seats from the so-called Great Hall. This was the heart of the Palace of the Republic."

"When we conduct tours with interested individuals, we talk a lot about what we actually do here as a collection. We are not just a storage facility, we conduct scientific work here. We categorise the items, and this is an important part of the museum work that we do here."

"Why do we preserve cultural assets from the past of the GDR? Because it is a part of German history that, although it may have lasted only about 45 years, plays an important role in shaping the identity of both East Germany and Germany as a whole. We want to preserve this part of history for the long term. This is also one of the tasks we have as a collection and that we clearly take on as a museum: To convey historical and political education about the East of Germany."
