STORYLINE:
After tallying his 892nd NHL goal, Russian superstar Alexander Ovechkin is now a hat-trick away from breaking Wayne Gretzky’s all-time record.
Muscovites expressed their pride to see their compatriot, who has played his entire NHL career with the Washington Capitals, on their brink of an historic achievement.
At the stadium of his first professional hockey team, Dynamo Moscow, a countdown banner has been regularly updated to keep up with the chase.
"Everyone is following this record," said Nikita Bakhurov, the club’s press secretary.
Ovechkin took another step closer by scoring in the Capitals’ 5-1 loss at the Carolina Hurricanes on Wednesday night.
It leaves him on track to break the record with seven games left for Washington in the NHL regular season.
His next chance to add to his total will be against the Chicago Blackhawks on Friday.
Gretzky’s all-time tally of 894 was long seen as insurmountable.
Former Russian NHL player Igor Larionov, now the coach of the Torpedo Nizhny Novgorod hockey club, said he knew Ovechkin had what it takes to be one of the best players of his generation when he met him at the start of his career.
"Every time he stepped on the ice, he was going to be the best," Larionov said.
