STORYLINE:
Flattened buildings in Kentucky gave evidence of the severity of storms that ripped through the South and Midwest on Wednesday and Thursday.

Residents were seen clearing debris from buildings that had their facades completely torn out by the severe weather.

Violent storms and tornadoes tore through cities from Oklahoma to Indiana during what could be a record-setting period of deadly weather and flooding.

The storms destroyed homes and sent debris nearly 5 miles into the air in one location.

In far western Kentucky, four people were injured while taking shelter in a vehicle under a church carport, according to the emergency management office in Ballard County.

Dozens of tornado and severe thunderstorm warnings were issued Wednesday and early Thursday from Texas to West Virginia as storms hit those and other states.

Forecasters warned Thursday of catastrophic weather soon ahead.

Satellite imagery showed thunderstorms lining up like freight trains — taking the same tracks over communities in Arkansas, Tennessee and Kentucky, according to the national Weather Prediction Center in Maryland.

At least six people were killed in Tennessee, Indiana and Missouri.

Forecasters say it was the opening act for a week of wild weather that could bring life-threatening flash floods across the nation’s midsection.
