STORYLINE:
Crowds attended a celebratory rally in central Seoul on Friday after the South Korean constitutional court decided to formally unseat President Yoon Suk Yeol.

The court unanimously removed Yoon from office Friday, ending his tumultuous presidency and setting up a new election, four months after he threw the nation into turmoil with an ill-fated declaration of martial law.

Hundreds of anti-Yoon protesters gathered in Seoul, holding bright placards calling for democracy and singing songs in jubilation in response to verdict.

"We are so happy. We are excited," said Inja Cho who travelled from Paju, north of the South Korean capital, to join the rally.

"As soon as we heard (about) the impeachment of Yoon Suk Yeol we were so crazy and dancing. So happy.”

An election will be held within two months for a new president.

But a festering divide over Yoon’s impeachment could complicate South Korea’s efforts to deal with crucial issues like President Donald Trump’s tariffs and other “America First” policies, observers say.

“Whoever becomes the next president, I hope that person will truly recognize the people as the sovereign authority,” said Hanul Park, a member of Candle Action, a group that regularly organizes anti-Yoon rallies.

Yoon still faces criminal charges of rebellion, but he’s unlikely to fade into the background.

He is likely to thrust himself onto the political agenda, rallying his hard-core supporters and influencing the choice of the next leader of his party, which has made intensive efforts to regroup around calls for his reinstatement.
