"We’re working on a pretty thin margin. We’re not making a huge profit margin. So of course, we’ll do our best to be competitive and not to impact as much as possible. We’ll obviously negotiate with our suppliers to see how they can help out to absorb some of the costs as well."

"Well, it’ll make our job harder. There’s no doubt about it. I’m sure people will be a little bit more hesitant to pay a higher price to go out and eat sushi and pick up a pack of nice-looking salmon but might think twice when they look at the price tag."

STORYLINE:
American sushi lovers could soon see higher menu prices when they eat at Japanese restaurants.

President Trump announced tariffs on goods from a large number of countries that export salmon, tuna and other fish to the United States.

Marine International Products Inc., a seafood wholesaler and distributor in Hayward, Calif., imports fish from countries such as Japan, South Korea, Mexico and Canada as well as Europe.

Vice President Glenn Sakata said his company expects to pay higher prices for its seafood imports and pass on the cost to his restaurant and supermarket customers, leading to higher consumer prices.

Sakata said Trump’s tariff policy is creating a lot of uncertainty that will make it harder to do business.
