"Tariffs won’t just hurt South Korea or other U.S. allies. The U.S. will also sustain heavy damage, so I just think it would be better (for the U.S.) not to impose tariffs."

5. SOUNDBITE (Korean) Bae Ju Wan, 32, job seeker:
"I am looking for a job right now. International affairs must be normalized for the economy to be normalized, so I can find a job. Due to instability, companies are hiring fewer people or not hiring at all. For example, I don’t see that many job postings compared to last year. I find that unfortunate."

STORYLINE:
The sweeping new tariffs announced Wednesday by U.S. President Donald Trump were met initially with measured reactions from key trading partners, highlighting the lack of appetite for a full-fledged trade war.

Trump presented the import taxes, which he calls “reciprocal tariffs” and range from 10% to 49%, in the simplest terms: the U.S. would do to its trading partners what he said they had been doing to the U.S. for decades.

Some South Korean people say they are concerned over Trump’s tariffs.

Park Ju Hyeong, a 20-year-old college student, said Thursday in Seoul that he was confused why the U.S. would impose tariffs, which would also hurt its own economy.

Bae Ju Wan, who is looking for a job at 32, said he was worried that tariffs’ effects on the economy would make it harder for him to find a job.

Earlier in the day, South Korea’s stock market opened lower amid concerns over the U.S. tariff announcement.

Past 10 a.m. on Thursday, South Korea’s benchmark Korea Composite Stock Price Index (KOSPI) fell to 2476.22, which was 1.18 percent lower than Wednesday’s close.
