"Well, my "Somewhat disappointed because it’s a lot easier for us if we’re able to trade without tariffs, but not surprised. If anything, my surprise would be that we are at 10% rather than — not surprised, but my gratefulness is that we’re at 10% and not more than that."

2. SOUNDBITE (English) David Lockwood, chairman of Neal’s Yard Dairy:
"This time we have a little bit of an advantage to the cheeses out of the EU, as they’re at 20%. But I think, you know, our concern and we’re about to go into a meeting that’s where I have a time limit is people’s disposable income in the States is going to be hit hard. And so I don’t know how much that 10% advantage for us will matter. Frankly, I’d rather — and I think most of my colleagues in our industry would say this — I’d rather just compete on a level playing field and not have tariffs in the way, and just let it be about the quality of the cheese, the service we provide and the price that we could offer."

3. SOUNDBITE (English) David Lockwood, chairman of Neal’s Yard Dairy:
"We’re really focused on what we can do rather than what’s happening to us. Of course, we wallow in it for a few minutes. But. But no one, you know, if you stick with that, it really it doesn’t work. And the other thing is we work with a lot of, you know, we work with British and Irish cheesemakers, but primarily British ones these days. And it’s really important that we’re on top of things and helping keep that end of the market going, keep it strong. And so, frankly, if the U.S, which is an important market to our business, about a third of our sales, if we take a kick there, then we have to figure out where where do we find some more traction. And we’ve been working very hard on our domestic sales. We’ve been trying to refigure our European sales post-Brexit. We do a bit of sales elsewhere in the world, but it’s really not material compared to the States and Europe. And so we need to find different ways to move forward."

4. SOUNDBITE (English) David Lockwood, chairman of Neal’s Yard Dairy:
"I have confidence in the producers and I have confidence in the people I work with here. And mostly confidence in the product, that these cheeses taste really good and we offer something really, really good."

STORYLINE:
A leading purveyor of high-end British cheese says President Donald Trump’s tariffs will be a blow to U.S. exports that make up a third of the company’s sales.

David Lockwood, chairman of London-based Neal’s Yard Dairy, said he’s grateful that Britain got hit with only a 10% tariff. He said that gives U.K. cheesemakers “a little bit of an advantage to the cheeses out of the EU, as they’re at 20%.”

But a bigger concern is that “people’s disposable income in the States is going to be hit hard. And so I don’t know how much that 10% advantage for us will matter.”

“Frankly, I’d rather — and I think most of my colleagues in our industry would say this — I’d rather just compete on a level playing field and not have tariffs in the way, and just let it be about the quality of the cheese, the service we provide and the price that we could offer,” Lockwood said.

Tariffs are the latest blow for a cheese industry that has endured Britain’s exit from the European Union in 2020 – which ended seamless movement of goods between the U.K. and its neighbors – and the disruption of the COVID-19 pandemic.
