STORYLINE:
A section of the small town of Lake City, Arkansas, was a scene of destruction on Thursday. Homes along the highway that crosses through the town had collapsed, their brick walls crushed and roofs gone.

Three cars had been lifted off the ground, flipped, and tossed into trees, Other vehicles were smashed by fallen trees. A child’s bicycle, stuffed animals, busted appliances, and other contents of homes sat exposed to the pouring rain. Workers using bulldozers had begun removing debris. One worker was checking for gas leaks near the rubble of one home.

Cody Ferguson, 29, stood outside of his demolished home on Thursday, wearing a bright yellow windbreaker and a baseball hat in the rain. Ferguson said he had been home for an hour after getting work when he saw the tornado approaching across a field and ran to the home of his neighbors, They hid together in a storm shelter for about 15 minutes as the twister roared over them.

“I don’t really know how to explain it,” he said. “Just real loud rumbling, a lot of bangs, debris … I’m just glad we are all safe.”

The first thing Ferguson did, he said, was look for his pets. He found his dog, but his two cats were missing. A neighbor from across the street was seriously injured and taken to a hospital in Memphis, he said.

Ferguson said he had built his home from the ground up, and he still did not know if he planned to rebuild. Aside from his pets, the first thing he looked for when he emerged from the storm shelter was photos of his children that he had in his house.
“It was all in my upstairs. It’s completely gone,” he said. “Other than that, everything else is replaceable.”
