"The U.S. side, under the guise of reciprocity, imposed tariffs on products from many countries, including China. This seriously violates WTO rules and severely damages the rules-based multilateral trading system. China firmly opposes this and will take necessary measures to resolutely safeguard its legitimate interests."

"The unilateral tariff hikes by the U.S. violate WTO rules, harm the common interests of people of all countries, and do not help solve the problems of the U.S. itself. It is clear to everyone that more and more countries are opposing the U.S.’s unilateral bullying actions, such as imposing tariffs."

STORYLINE:
China on Thursday expressed strong opposition to the U.S. reciprocal tariffs against the country announced by President Donald Trump, warning that it would take “necessary measures” to defend its legitimate rights.
Trump on Wednesday announced sweeping tariffs across a number of countries.
For China, the Trump administration slapped 34% tariffs, in addition to the 20% announced earlier this year.
That would mean a 54% tariff on Chinese goods that are imported to the United States, once the latest round comes into effect next week.
Chinese Foreign Ministry spokesperson Guo Jiakun lambasted the latest measures at a daily news briefing in Beijing, saying they “violate WTO rules, harm the common interests of people of all countries, and do not help solve the problems of the U.S. itself.”
“China urges the U.S. to correct its wrong practices and resolve trade disputes with all countries, including China, through consultations based on equality, mutual respect and mutual benefit,” said Guo.
With earlier rounds of tariffs China reacted by imposing higher duties on U.S. exports of farm products, while limiting exports of minerals used for high-tech industries such as electric vehicles.
