"President Trump has imposed stiff new import taxes or tariffs on goods from all over the world and that includes major trading partners like the European Union where the U.S. is the top destination for their exports. And this announcement is not going down very well in Europe, it’s being called a ‘major blow’ to the global economy by Ursula von der Leyen, who’s the head of the European Commission and the Europeans are working on possible retaliation. But the real message coming from Europe is that they’d really rather not get into a trade war with the United States and that they are always ready to negotiate to address some of the US trade concerns and hopefully rescind these tariffs which would cost anybody who imports goods from the European Union an additional 20%. There is talk of retaliation, and that could include areas where the U.S. is perhaps more vulnerable, such as exports of services rather than goods, for instance, US tech companies like Google or Amazon could be hit with new taxes in Europe. But really, the message from Europe is that they just don’t want do this. They’re hoping that there’s a window to talk this over with the administration and not see these new import taxes come into force, or at least not at the level that they are right now."

STORYLINE:
World leaders are reacting with dismay, threats of countermeasures and calls for swift negotiations to make trade rules fairer in response to the sweeping new tariffs announced by U.S. President Donald Trump.
But initial moves have been measured, suggesting key trading partners hope to avoid outright trade wars with the world’s biggest economy.
European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen says the tariffs are a "major blow" to the world economy with dire consequences for millions of people around the globe.
Von der Leyen acknowledged that the world trading system has “serious deficiencies” and said the EU was ready to negotiate with the U.S.
Asian markets fell in Thursday trading and U.S. futures tumbled, setting up what could be a brutal trading day in the U.S. as investors brace for the economic shocks.
Trump said in his “Liberation Day” announcement that the import taxes, ranging from 10% to 49%, would do to U.S. trading partners what they have long done to the U.S., and draw factories and jobs back to the United States.
