STORYLINE
US soldiers returning from the front-line at Gardez in eastern Afghanistan returned to Bagram airbase on Monday.
The soldiers returned on Chinooks, after US-trained Afghani troops replaced them, and many expressed their relief at their safe return.
John Smerbank, expressing relief at being back, said he’d be happier when he got home while Michael Rojis of the 101 Airborne said he was fighting for his family and showed a photograph of them around his neck.
Major Bryan Hilferty, spokesperson for the 10th Mountain Division, stressed that operations were still continuing to destroy ‘terrorist’ positions.
He also said coalition forces numbering two-thousand, including local Afghani allies, were still in the area and were being backed up by aircraft fire.
