Atlanta, Georgia – 1 April 2025
1. Various of people protesting outside Centers for Disease Control and Prevention headquarters
2. SOUNDBITE (English) Dr. Larry Slutsker, Atlanta resident:
“I’m a very strong believer in the work that CDC does. I worked for CDC for 30 years, and it is one of the best public health institutions in the world. And these cuts to the CDC are going to be very damaging to Americans and to the rest of the world as well.”
3. Pan of protesters
4. SOUNDBITE (English) Dr. Larry Slutsker, Atlanta resident:
“I think the layoffs are completely nonsensical and have shown no particular thought. No particular intelligence and certainly no sign of efficiency. There was no input from the leaders of the institution as to how they could at least intelligently try to reduce in force. And it was done by people who absolutely don’t know what they’re doing.”
4. Various of protesters
5. SOUNDBITE (English) Sarah Boim, former employee for Agency for Toxic Substances and Disease Registry:
“Got a letter that I was fired for performance on February 15th, which is a Saturday night. My performance was outstanding. I was a 4.66 out of five. And I think that we’ve established that those terminations were illegal.”
6. Wide of protesters
7. SOUNDBITE (English) Sarah Boim, former employee for Agency for Toxic Substances and Disease Registry:
“The outpouring of support has been very encouraging. The idea that people are celebrating these firings is, to me, unimaginable. So knowing that there’s so many people that are shocked and upset about what’s going on was very encouraging.”
8. Close of sign
9. SOUNDBITE (English) Peter Farruggia, CDC public health advisor:
“I was actually talking to my supervisor earlier today and we both kind of said it at the same time. We have a bit of survivors remorse or, you know, if that’s how you want to say. And so, you know, there is a little bit of guilt and stuff weighing over us. I mean, obviously, I’m extremely grateful and thankful that I still have a job. But the fact that we’re losing so many amazing colleagues, friends, coworkers is truly just gut wrenching.”

11. Close of CDC signage
12. SOUNDBITE (English) Peter Farruggia, CDC public health advisor:
“It’s not random either. A good majority of the offices that were eliminated today, the work that they do, affects predominantly people of color, minorities. And so it seems like this is very targeted for the type of work that was cut today.”
13. Mid of protesters
14. Close of protesters chanting
15. SOUNDBITE (English) Peter Farruggia, CDC public health advisor:
“And CDC contributes a great deal of economic impact to Atlanta, to the state of Georgia. And the fact that all these employees are getting cut, it’s going to have a pretty profound effect on the local economy.”

STORYLINE:
Employees across the massive U.S. Health and Human Services Department received notices Tuesday that their jobs were being eliminated, part of a sweeping overhaul designed to vastly shrink the agencies responsible for protecting and promoting Americans’ health.
The cuts include researchers, scientists, doctors, support staff and senior leaders, leaving the government without many of the key experts who have long guided U.S. decisions on medical research, drug approvals and other issues.
