"This year, these notes contain many wishes, from soldiers, from wounded soldiers, from bereaved families, from people who went through the terrible disaster of ‘Simchat Torah’ (on Oct. 7, 2023) and since the war – each with their own struggles. Some of them were here, many of them, and some sent us notes during this year. There are also notes here that were sent from around the world, from many countries, even countries that are not friends of the State of Israel sent notes here."

7. SOUNDBITE (English) Jean Philippe Rubin, Jerusalem resident:
"Today we will attend a special ceremony which consists of taking out these pieces of paper and putting them – because they are holy papers – in the archive, and keep them for posterity. And we hope that everybody in the world will come to the Western Wall and pray, as the world leaders to the creator to have salvations in the livelihood, in marital peace, children education and happiness. All the blessings from the Western Wall"

STORYLINE:
Notes placed into crevices between the ancient stones of the Western Wall in Jerusalem were removed on Wednesday ahead of the Jewish holiday of Passover.
"This year, these notes contain many wishes, from soldiers, from wounded soldiers, from bereaved families, from people who went through the terrible disaster of ‘Simchat Torah’ (on Oct. 7, 2023)," Western Wall Rabbi Shmuel Rabinovitch said.
The notes are cleared out twice a year, before the Jewish new year and ahead of the Passover festival.
According to The Western Wall Heritage Foundation, tens of thousands of notes are cleared during each operation.
Passover is the Jewish holiday celebrating the biblical Israelites’ liberation from slavery in Egypt after a series of divine plagues.
