“The U.S. market is a very important market for Italian olive oil, I would add for European olive oil. The U.S. has grown in ten years as far as Italy is concerned, by 158% and so there is a lot of desire to consume Italian wine and food. And in particular olive oil weighs 32% (of the total food export). We are talking about a value of about 1 billion euros. Certainly olive oil is a product very much attached to Italian identity, associated with health, well-being, and a lot of promotion has been done over the years to increase the knowledge on the benefits of olive oil in general and extra virgin oil in particular. So we are talking about a product that can not be easily replaced. It’s a product that hopefully Americans can’t do without.”

STORYLINE:
Italian farmers and cheese makers are concerned about the arrival of higher tariffs on their exports to the United States.

But they are confident the quality of famed products such as extra virgin olive oil and Parmigiano Reggiano hard cheese will weather the impact of the new levies.

One third of Italian olive oil exports and 23% of Parmesan exports are sent to the U.S., making the North American country the largest export destination for those two iconic Italian products.

“Those who buy Parmesan cheese in the United States are buying it with high awareness. They want to definitively buy Parmesan cheese. Because if not they would have the 93% remaining market to pick an alternative, at about 30% of the price,” explained Nicola Bertinelli, president of the Parmigiano Reggiano consortium.

Parmesan cheese is produced exclusively in several provinces around Reggio Emilia.

Cows are fed according to strict guidelines and maturation can last from 12 to 36 months.

According to a study of the Italian Farmers Confederation (CIA) Italy is highly vulnerable to rising tariffs, as it exports more than 11% of its food and agriculture production to the U.S.

Olive oil is no exception, as the U.S. represents by far the largest export market.
