"Today is the 13th day of Nowruz, the ancient holiday of the Iranians. On this day, we prefer to stay outdoors in nature because ancient Iranians loved nature and paid a lot of respect to it. We hope that our people continue to be like that. Our ancestors cherished the nature, took care of soil, water, trees. In particular, they tried to keep the soil clean."

STORYLINE:
Most Iranians spent Wednesday outdoors to celebrate the ancient holiday of Sizdah Bedar.

Literally meaning "13th outdoor", the festival is meant to get rid of the bad luck which is associated with the 13th day of the Nowruz holiday.

The festival is a legacy from Iran’s pre-Islamic past that hard-liners in the Islamic Republic never managed to erase from calendars.

It’s called the Nature Day in the official calendar and many believe that it’s bad luck to stay indoors for the holiday.

Families across the country spread rugs and set up small tents in outdoor areas to mark the holiday.

They have lunch, sip on tea and munch on seeds as well as fruit and candy.

"Today is the 13th day of Nowruz, the ancient holiday of Iranians. On this day we prefer to stay outdoor in nature, because ancient Iranians loved the nature and paid it a lot of respect," says Nargez Fazeli, 52, a woman spending time with her family in a park.

This year’s Nowruz comes at a difficult time for Iran as economic struggles mount.

Trump has threatened new sanctions on Iran as part of his "maximum pressure" campaign targeting the country.
