STORYLINE:
The Chinese foreign ministry said Chinese Red Cross rescue teams and supplies are safe after reports that a relief convoy of the organization was attacked.

“The relief supplies provided by the Red Cross Society of China to Myanmar have arrived in Myanmar and are being transported to disaster-stricken area in Mandalay. The rescue personnel and supplies are safe at present,” said Guo Jiakun at a daily briefing on Wednesday.

Tatmadaw, one of Myanmar’s powerful militias groups, attacked a relief convoy of nine Chinese Red Cross vehicles late Tuesday on a road in the norther part of Shan state near Ohn Ma Tee village, according to the Ta’ang National Liberation Army.

The TNLA said the Chinese Red Cross was bringing supplies to Mandalay and had reported its route to the military.

Guo didn’t directly comment on the attack. He called on all factions and ethnic groups in Myanmar to “work together to combat the disaster”.

“China strongly urges all parties in Myanmar to ensure the safety of materials and rescue personnel from all countries, including China, and to ensure that the rescue transportation channels are clear,” Guo said.
