"The prosecutors are not doing their job, I have been shouting Lilith’s name for two years and two months, why? Because for the prosecutors trans people simply don’t matter, that’s why I marched on Women’s Day, that’s why I marched against forced disappearances and I keep shouting Lilith’s name with my voice. I am a mother who suffers her absence."

STORYLINE:
LGBTQ+ collectives and transgender activists gathered on Monday to commemorate Transgender Day of Visibility in Mexico City.

Dozens marched as they demanded prevention policies and justice for the killings of transgender people that continue to mar the country.

In 2024, at least 80 LGBTQ+ people were killed in Mexico and at least 55 were trans women, according to the rights group Letra S. The group also stated in 2024 that over the previous six years documented at least 513 targeted killings of LGBTQ+ people in Mexico.

Last year was one of the most violent years for the LGBTQ+ community in Mexico. This wave of violence was condemned by the Inter-American Commission on Human Rights.

Cases of violence have continued to rise, according to Letra S, and are meant to send a message that queer people are not welcome in Mexican society.

Due to high levels of corruption and overall disfunction in Mexico’s government, around 99% of crimes in Mexico go unsolved.
