STORYLINE:
Belgian King Philippe on Tuesday met with Vietnamese leaders during a trip to boost ties and promote cooperation with the Southeast Asian nation.
Philippe, who leads a business delegation, said that Belgium wants to broaden investment and further expand cooperation to new areas in Vietnam.
After meeting, the leaders supervised the signing of several documents, including an agreement in principle between Belgium’s Aquitara Impact Fund I and Vietnam’s Association of Victims of Agent Orange.
The fund is a dedicated initiative focused on restoring land contaminated by Agent Orange/dioxin in Vietnam, according to the Belgian Embassy in Hanoi.
It aims to remediate polluted land, reducing health risks for local populations, while also developing eco-industrial parks, fostering both environmental restoration and sustainable economic growth, the embassy said.
Between 1962 and 1971, the U.S. military sprayed roughly 11 million gallons of the chemical agent dioxin used in Agent Orange across large swaths of southern Vietnam to defoliate jungles and destroy crops during the Vietnam War.
Dioxin stays in the soil and in the sediment of lakes and rivers for generations.
It can enter the food supply through the fat of fish and other animals.
