“It is an ongoing process OK but right now still go on and when the times comes you will know and we will know but right now we still have hope and experience tells us that even one week we still have hope. There is a rush for us to do it but for the ending there is no rush for us.”

STORYLINE:
Bangkok’s Governor said on Tuesday that there was still hope of finding survivors under the rubble of a building that collapsed during last week’s earthquake, and that the time hadn’t yet come to call a halt to the rescue operation.

“There is a rush for us to do it, but for the ending there is no rush,” said Chadchart Sittipunt, at the site of the ongoing work.

He said information from those who escaped the disaster was helping them decide which areas of the debris to focus on.

“They found out that most of the workers they ran through the fire escape so the ones who came first can escape but there were many people behind them so we believe there will be many people stuck on the lift core or fire exit – and that gives us hope,” he said.

So far 14 bodies have been recovered, including one on Tuesday. More than 70 are believed still missing. Hopes for finding survivors have faded as the days have passed.

“Right now there’s no sign of survivors. We think there are maybe 12 bodies inside that we don’t remove yet because some got stuck in the heavy stuff on top of them so right now our focus will be more on the survival so we try to go in.”
