STORYLINE:
Yemenis in the capital of Sanaa marked the Eid al-Fitr holiday on Sunday with special prayers and family time outdoors.
Families gathered in public parks with their children to celebrate the festival, which marks the end of the Muslim fasting month of Ramadan.
The celebrations come despite a recent U.S. airstrike campaign targeting Houthi rebels over their attacks on ships in the Red Sea.
"Eid in Yemen is normal, everything is fine as usual. Like every first day (of Eid), it’s about visiting family and meeting with relatives. Then people go to the parks for a picnic," said Ali Muhammad, a Sanaa resident.
The U.S. has moved from solely targeting launch sites to firing at ranking personnel as well as dropping bombs in city neighborhoods, an Associated Press review of the recent operation showed.
The new campaign of airstrikes, which the Houthis now say have killed at least 59 people, started after the rebels threatened to begin targeting "Israeli" ships again over Israel blocking aid entering the Gaza Strip.
The Houthis have fired a handful of long-range missiles at Israel in the days since Israeli forces resumed the war in the Gaza Strip.
Air raid sirens were heard in several areas of Israel on Sunday as the military said it intercepted a missile launched from Yemen.
Overnight into Monday morning, suspected U.S. airstrikes struck around Sanaa, and the Iranian-backed Houthis said at least one person was killed and four others were wounded.
The attacks followed a night of airstrikes early Friday that appeared particularly intense compared to other days in the campaign that began March 15.
