STORYLINE:
Tens of thousands of demonstrators took to the streets of São Paulo on Sunday to protest against a proposed amnesty for former president Jair Bolsonaro and others accused of attempting to overturn the results of Brazil’s 2022 presidential election.
The demonstration, organized by left-wing groups, labor unions, and pro-democracy activists, filled the iconic Avenida Paulista with chants of "No Amnesty!" and "Prison for Bolsonaro"
The protest comes as Bolsonaro and allied lawmakers are pushing for a bill that could shield him and his allies from legal consequences for their alleged involvement in the January 8, 2023, attacks on government buildings in Brasília.
Protesters argue that granting amnesty would undermine democratic institutions and set a dangerous precedent for political impunity.
"Bolsonaro has to pay, and pay dearly, for what he has done to Brazilian society. If he had managed to carry out the coup, we would not even have the right to be here demonstrating today," said José Pereira, a union member who was protesting.
The demonstration was largely peaceful, with a heavy police presence.
The protesters marched from Avenida Paulista to the former building of the police headquarters where political opponents were arrested and tortured during the military dictatorship in Brazil after the 1964 coup.
