"The UK Prime Minister, standing alongside President Macron in France, ensuring that we share the load here in Europe and that we continue to partner with our friends in the United States to broker and to get the peace that the Ukrainian people deserve. But let us be absolutely clear: peace in Ukraine and security for Ukraine is also about wider security in Europe and wider Euro-Atlantic security that keeps the global community safe."

5. SOUNDBITE (French) Jean-Noël Barrot, French Foreign Minister:
"Yes, if we want peace and security, we must deter the threat, and we will deter the threat by force _ by military force, a military force that will rely on our economic strength and our moral strength. We have all the means to achieve this: we have abundant savings, we have a level of debt that is much lower than in other regions of the world, we have a single market that is particularly powerful, and we have an unrivalled capacity for innovation."

7. SOUNDBITE (English) Kaja Kallas, High Representative of the European Union for Foreign Affairs and Security Policy:
“The US has called the talks and doing the shuttle diplomacy but right now I think what we need is also Russia to agree to this ceasefire and to move on, to show a goodwill by giving back the Ukrainian children that have been deported to Russia or releasing the prisoners of war, I mean many things that they can show. I think the US also has the role to put more pressure on Russia to stop this war.”

STORYLINE:
Some of Europe’s biggest economies, plus foreign policy and security chiefs from UK, Ukraine and the EU met in Madrid on Monday to discuss the security situation in Ukraine, the fulfilment of a ceasefire with Russia and the security challenges facing Europe on its eastern and southern borders.
The meeting, held as G5+, is intended to “facilitate dialogue and concretion of the subjects affecting the security of Europe and in particular help for Ukraine,” according to the Spanish foreign ministry.
This will be the fourth such meeting of this format, after previous meetings in Poland, Germany and France.
Monday’s meeting gathered foreign ministers for Spain, the UK, France and Poland, and a secretary of state for foreign affairs from Italy, as well as the EU’s high representative, alongside other EU officials
The German Foreign Minister joined by video link, as did the Ukrainian security chief.
