"Authorities in Bangkok have been saying that 72 hours was the important time period for finding anybody left alive under the rubble of the building that collapsed during Friday’s earthquake. Well, that window has now closed, but the authorities say they’re not giving up hope and they’re pressing on with the operation. And as if to underline that, almost right on the 72-hour mark, they said they think, or they thought maybe they had found a sign of life. It actually happened during a visit to the site by Thailand’s Prime Minister Paetongtarn Shinawatra. And in fact, they asked her to leave so that they could concentrate on the work and consult with experts. They did, however, stress that they couldn’t guarantee that it was a genuine sign of life, and it might be a false positive. In Myanmar, meanwhile, the death toll has risen past 1,700. That’s according to the military authorities. But it is thought that the real number of dead and injured could be many times higher."

STORYLINE:
Thai rescue workers who were coordinating efforts on Monday to find anyone left alive under a collapsed building in the capital Bangkok after the Myanmar earthquake said they had detected signs of possible life.
The discovery curtailed a visit to the site of the building, felled by last week’s earthquake, by Prime Minister Paetongtarn Shinawatra. Officials said they needed to consult experts so needed her to leave.
The Deputy Governor of Bangkok Tavida Kamolvej told reporters she was unsure what the sign of possible life was but suggested it might be a heartbeat. She did though caution that there was no certainty the signal they had detected indicated a survivor.
Meanwhile, the death toll from the earthquake that hit Myanmar has risen to more than 1,700 as more bodies have been pulled from the rubble, the country’s military-led government said Monday morning.
