"At this stage, I can tell you there was no recorded activity that justified strikes. It is absolutely necessary that this framework that we’ve established, sorry, that was agreed upon by Lebanon and Israel, be fully respected. Unilaterally, Israel did not respect it today. We’ve had no information or proof of what may have triggered or generated this."

STORYLINE:
French president Emmanuel Macron condemned Friday what he called “unacceptable strikes on Beirut” after Israel launched an attack on the Lebanese capital for the first time since a ceasefire ended the latest Israel-Hezbollah war in November.
Speaking at a joint press conference alongside Lebanon president Joseph Aoun, Macron said the renewed tensions “mark a turning point,” adding that France will continue to be at Lebanon’s side to help it preserve its “sovereignty” and guarantee its security.
"There was no recorded activity that justified strikes," Macron said.
He said it was "absolutely necessary" that the ceasefire is respected, adding that "unilaterally, Israel did not respect it today."
He said he will speak with U.S. President Donald Trump and Israel’s Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu in the coming hours over the situation in Lebanon.
Macron added that France will continue to be at Lebanon’s side to help it preserve its sovereignty and guarantee its security.
He said that the Israeli army “must withdraw as quickly as possible from the five positions it continues to occupy on Lebanese territory to allow the Lebanese army to deploy there, and the civilian population to return home.”
