STORYLINE:
Muslim faithful gathered at a mosque in Jakarta for the last Friday prayers of the fasting month of Ramadan, which is approaching its end.

In Indonesia, where 90% of the 282 million population is Muslim, Ramadan is a sacred time and is highly anticipated as a month of fasting and spiritual reflection.

Ramadan is a time of togetherness for Muslims, as they fill mosques for hours of prayer and share large, lavish meals with family.

Worshippers gathered at Jakarta’s famed Istiqlal Grand Mosque to perform the last Friday prayer of Ramadan.

Muhammad Ebi, a businessman who works not far from the Istiqlal Mosque, always makes time for Friday prayers at this mosque.

"If we pray Friday prayers in the fasting month (of Ramadan), the reward will be greater than Friday prayers in other months," Ebi said.

The Istiqlal mosque is favourite for Ebi because of its comfortable atmosphere.

The mosque committee’s daily agenda during Ramadan includes discussing Islamic studies and praying in congregation.

For Muslims around the world, Ramadan is a time of increased worship, religious reflection, charity, good deeds and dawn-to-dusk fasting.

The daily fast in Ramadan includes abstaining from all food and drink – not even a sip of water is allowed – from dawn to sunset before breaking the fast in a meal known as "iftar" in Arabic.

Those fasting are expected to also refrain from bad deeds, such as gossiping.

Muslims in Ramadan typically stream into mosques for congregational prayers and dedicate more time for religious contemplation and the reading of the Quran, the Muslim holy book.

Ramadan is followed by the joyous Islamic holiday of Eid al-Fitr.
