RESTRICTION SUMMARY:
China MOFA 28 March 2025
Duration: 5’39
Spokesperson: Guo Jiakun
STORYLINE:
1. French Foreign Minister Jean-Noël Barrot visited China from March 27 to 28 at the invitation of the Chinese side. Could the spokesperson provide further details on this visit?
Amid the current complex and changing international situation, maintaining close communication and cooperation between China and France not only serves the interests of both countries but also contributes to the healthy development of China-EU relations and world peace and stability.
This visit by Foreign Minister Barrot, his first visit to China since taking office, comes at the beginning of a new cycle in China-France relations. The Chinese side attaches great importance to this visit. Premier Li Qiang met with him, and Foreign Minister Wang Yi held talks with him and jointly met with the press. Both sides had in-depth communication on China-France relations, China-EU relations, and international and regional issues of common concern, reaching multiple consensuses.
Both sides agreed that in the face of profound changes in the international landscape, China and France, as comprehensive strategic partners, should demonstrate historical awareness, uphold multilateralism against unilateralism, promote dialogue and cooperation against bloc confrontation, and pursue mutual benefit and win-win outcomes against decoupling and disruptions in supply chains, promoting China-France relations to show new achievements in the new cycle.
2. U.S. Secretary of Defense Pete Hegseth will visit the Philippines. Today, he stated that in the face of threats from China, the U.S. and the Philippines must stand together. What is the foreign ministry’s comment on this?
Any cooperation between the US and the Philippines should not target a third party or harm the interests of any third party, nor should it hype up the so-called threat, provoke confrontation, or escalate regional tensions.
I want to stress that there has never been any issue with freedom of navigation and overflight in the South China Sea. It is the US that has been condoning allies to provoke and create trouble in the South China Sea, repeatedly fabricating the false narrative that China threatens freedom of navigation in the South China Sea. It is also the US that continues to strengthen military deployments in the region, attempting to undermine regional peace and stability. The US should abandon its Cold War mentality, stop inciting ideological confrontation, stop stirring up trouble in the South China Sea, stop sowing discord in the region, and stop acting as a disruptor and troublemaker in the South China Sea.
We also urge the Philippines not to rely on the US to create trouble in the South China Sea and not even to attempt to provoke military confrontation.
3. To follow up on Hegseth’s remarks, he pointed out that the U.S. and the Philippines should boost military ties with the Philippines to strengthen deterrence against “threats from the communist Chinese.” Do you have any comments on his specific reference to the “communist Chinese”?
I want to stress that the leadership of the Chinese Communist Party is a choice made by history and the people, and is explicitly stipulated in the Chinese Constitution. It enjoys wholehearted support from the Chinese people and cannot be shaken by any force.
4. On March 27, the British government once again released the six-monthly reports on Hong Kong. What is China’s comment on this?
China’s position on the Ukraine crisis has been consistent and clear.
