STORYLINE:
Israel on Friday launched an attack on the Lebanese capital, Beirut, for the first time since a ceasefire ended fighting between Israeli forces and Hezbollah in November.
After the strike, Israel’s army said it attacked a Hezbollah drone storage facility in the area of Dahiyeh, which it called a key Hezbollah stronghold.
The military said it carried out the strike after rockets were fired at Israel from Lebanon earlier in the morning.
It pledged to continue operations in order to "remove any threat" to Israeli civilians.
Hezbollah denied firing rockets at northern Israel, and accused Israel of seeking a pretext to continue attacking Lebanon.
Israel’s army had urgently warned people to evacuate parts of the Beirut suburb earlier in the day.
Chaos soon engulfed the area as Lebanese tried to flee the area.
The ceasefire took hold on Nov. 27, 2024, although Israel has struck targets in southern Lebanon almost daily since then.
Lebanon’s President Joseph Aoun condemned the airstrike and any attempt to “bring back the circle of violence” to the small nation.
